What makes Acrylic the dream material of every architect and builder?
Light Weight
Acrylic weighs only about half and (46%) as much a ordinary glass and this makes
it easy to handle and to mount on more simple structures.
Clarity
Colourless Acrylic sheets are as clear as crystal. Its light transmission rate
of 93% makes Acrylic sheets used for windows and skylight allow optimum entry of
natural light into interiors.
Weather Resistance
Sunlight, heat, low temperature and smog have no ill-effect on the colour, light
transmittance or physical properties of Acrylic fittings. Its outstanding
weather resistance has made Acrylic the finest construction material for
fittings which are exposed to the open. Acrylic has the ability to cut out
harmful ultraviolet radiation from light passing through it.
Breakage Resistance
Acrylic has 10 to 17 times greater breakage resistance than glass of equivalent
thickness. Unlike glass, any breakage that might occur is confined locally
without formation of sharp splinters. It is an ideal solution for window
breakage problems in schools, institutions, commercial, residential and
industrial buildings. owing to its lower brittleness, Acrylic sheets can be used
in thickness less than that of glass.
Easy Formability
Acrylic being a thermoplastic has the ease of formability. Beautiful curved
surfaces of generous radius can be formed at room temperature. Flawless panels
of various shapes - flat, square, spherical and circular can be thermoformed
with a high degree of safety. Easy formability allows builders
and architects to use Acrylic at various places in the building - imaginatively,
safely and economically.
Helps Save Energy
Acrylic is a better insulator than glass. In fact ordinary glass conducts heat
more than four times faster than Acrylic. The coefficient of thermal
conductivity is 1.4 BTU/HrFt2/0 F/inch as compared to 5-6 of ordinary glass. The
over-all coefficient of heat transmission is 1.04 compared to 1.25 for glass.
This makes Acrylic an ideal energy saving material. In air-conditioned rooms,
the use of properly designed and tinted Acrylic sheets helps save electricity.
Conversely, Acrylic can be used in systems designed to capture energy. Window
heat losses due to conduction and air filtration can often be reduced by 50%. A
boon for builders and architects.
Thermal Expansion
Acrylic like most thermoplastics has a large coefficient of thermal expansion.
When used in buildings, adequate provisions must be made for expansion and
contraction of Acrylic especially when used in very large parts.
Chemical Resistance
Acrylic is generally unaffected by most household detergents, cleaning agents
and solutions of inorganic acids, alkalies and aliphatic hydrocarbons. Acrylic
should not come in contact with chlorinated and aromatic hydrocarbons, esters
and ketones.
Finishing and decoration
Acrylic is available in transparent, translucent and opaque colours in a variety
of patterns, It can be glazed and printed by silk-screening, hot stamping,
spraying, engraving, metallizing and frosting. Acrylic can be readily turned,
milled, drilled with tools normally used for soft metals and requires non
special precautions. Acrylic parts/pieces can be joined by cementing, hot
air/gas welding, ultrasonic assembly, spin-welding, snap fitting or other simple
methods. This makes acrylic more expedient and economical than glass in the
building industry.
Varieties Of Acrylic Sheets
Acrylic is manufactured by Polymer unit of GSFC in technical collaboration with
M/s. mitsubishi Rayon Co.Ltd., Japan in various forms: Methyl Methacrylate
Monomer (Gujmer), cast acrylic sheets (Gujpol-S / Gujdip-Gujlink-S / Gujpat-S)
and acrylic moulding / extrusion grade pellets (Gujpol-P).
GSFC'S Acrylic Sheets are decidedly superior to other acrylic sheets available
in the market. They are specially treated to be stress-free and with low
residual monomer.
Other Applications
Basketball boards, Swimming pools, Enclosures. Architecture and the building
industry are making revolutionary progress today. And GSFC'S Acrylic & Nylon-6
provide powerful materials to give concrete shape to imagination and dreams.
